Any redlight bill should be modeled after the Philadelphia one where the DMV is not notified and no points are accessed. That same bill does NOT notify the insurance companies who extort us and have made living in CT miserable along with a high cost of doing business in CT. It is an effective deterrent in Philly. A stiff fine is an effective deterrent and the lack of passing data to the DMV and insurance companies cuts down on appealing the ticket and burdening our courts further.

Should say "relatively" slow- if the driver had been far exceeding the speed limit here, as most cars do, it is unlikely that the student would have been out of the hospital. At 40 MPH, virtually all crashes result in a pedestrian fatality. Good point though!

As a matter of record it should be mentioned that this effort began in Chatham Square Neighorhood where under the leadership of then Alder Erin Stugis Pascale the residents collaborated with the City Traffic Department and the Board of Education on the first "Walk to School Day" in October of 2007 at Clinton Avenue School. This was reported on Channel 8 News and in the New Haven Independent http://newhavenindependent.org/index.php/archives/entry/kids_sighted._._._walking/

Thanks to residents like Gerda Genece and many others the community raised the funds for a match-grant by The Community Foundation for Greater New Haven which in turn prompted City participation in the traffic study.

Good questions -- the report attempts to answer them. I agree that this isn't the most important issue in the U.S. but also think it's not necessarily a zero-sum game and is more of a policy issue on what types of services (e.g., clean water, good schools...) that all citizens should have access to: both health insurance and information are critical to the functioning of society and the inequities are very costly.

To me, it seems hard to overestimate the impact that cost has on families' ability to gain tech access. A lot of people have trouble just paying for housing and heat, so internet access is one of the first things to go - which can limit access to jobs, community, etc.

This is not an issue that you can solve just by spending money. What percentage of household members are computer-literate and have an actual desire to gain internet access? Of those who do not have a computer at home, how many use the internet at work or at a local library? And finally, is there substantial evidence that money spent this way would have a better effect than on, say, healthcare for the uninsured?

It is painful to watch this very expensive and time-consuming repaving in progress and know that when it's completed, cars will be flying up and down Whitney even faster than they already do. I'll probably avoid the walk on Whitney in favor of Livingston or Orange instead, which is a shame as Whitney is a more direct route. It's just not going to be a pleasant pedestrian experience, basically walking along a highway.

I hope that your letter to the City Engineer is as well-received as it is written.

I wonder how many bicycle riders get tickets for running red lights and stop signs, riding on sidewalks, and going the wrong way on one-way streets?

As a pedestrian, I see this happen all the time (and I often very nearly get hit because of bicycle infractions). Yet cyclists always complain about auto traffic violations!?

Cyclists should not call the kettle black.

I called in about a dirtbike in my backyard an hour and a half ago -- even took the kid's helmet to buy the cops some time. The kid (and his buddies) left 15 minutes later and I still haven't seen a cop.

This doesn't surprise me at all. I see NHPD cars doing rolling stops through the intersections on Cold Spring every week. Unfortunately they are also leading by example as non-police cars do the same thing, and not surprisingly there is no enforcement on this issue.
